WhatsApp is how a lot of people share videos with family, friends and customers, but the result often disappoints: a crisp video turns soft and blocky after sending, or a long video won't send at all.

Why WhatsApp makes videos blurry

When you send a video as a normal media message, WhatsApp re-compresses it to save data and speed up sending. It lowers the resolution and bitrate, often a lot. That's why a video that looked sharp on your phone looks muddy on the other person's.

WhatsApp now offers an HD option for videos, which compresses less. It's better, but it's still compressed. For full quality, you need to send the video as a document (more on that below).

The best format for WhatsApp videos

For videos that send smoothly and play on every phone:

Setting Best choice
Container MP4
Video codec H.264
Audio codec AAC
Resolution 720p (1280 × 720) or 1080p
Frame rate 30 fps

Why H.264 MP4? It plays on every phone, old or new. iPhones record in HEVC by default, which some older Android phones struggle with. If a contact says your video won't play, convert it with our MOV to MP4 converter first. The guide on converting MOV to MP4 explains the difference.

Why 720p? WhatsApp shrinks videos anyway, so sending 4K just wastes your data and time. 720p survives WhatsApp's compression well and looks good on a phone screen.

How to send a video in better quality

Option 1: Turn on HD. After choosing a video, tap the HD button at the top of the editor before sending. It compresses less than standard quality.

Option 2: Send it as a document (full quality). Documents aren't compressed at all, so the person gets the exact original file.

  • On iPhone: tap + → Document → Choose from Photos, pick the video and send.
  • On Android: tap the paperclip → Document, find the video in your files and send.

The downside: the recipient sees a file instead of a video preview, and has to tap to download and open it.

Option 3: Compress it yourself first. If you compress the video to a sensible size before sending, WhatsApp has less reason to crush it, and it sends much faster on slow connections. Use the video compressor with Balanced for most videos, or Smallest file if you're on mobile data. Compressing yourself with modern settings usually looks better than letting WhatsApp do it.

What about WhatsApp Status?

Status updates have a short time limit per video. Longer videos get split into several parts or trimmed when you post them. For the best Status quality:

  • Trim the video first to the moment you want to show.
  • Use vertical video (9:16) so it fills the screen.
  • Start from a 720p or 1080p MP4 rather than a video that's already been forwarded several times. Every forward compresses it again.

Sending long videos

Very long videos are better shared as documents (which allow much bigger files) or as a cloud link from Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive. If you'd rather keep it as a normal video message, trim it to the part that matters first.

Quick checklist before you send

  1. Is it MP4 H.264? If it's an iPhone MOV, convert it.
  2. Is it 720p or 1080p? Anything bigger just slows sending down.
  3. Does quality matter? Use HD, or send it as a document.
  4. On slow data? Compress it first.

Follow these steps and your videos will arrive looking the way they did on your phone, or very close to it.
